Please join us for our club meeting Sunday, August 8 at 3PM, at the Beau Jo's Pizza in Idaho Springs (Miner Street). All Club members are welcome and strongly encouraged to attend!

Board Notes
The Board has been meeting "virtually," courtesy of e-mail, to keep on top of recent venue and equipment developments. We're still waiting to hear about final decisions with regard to Snow Mountain Ranch Nordic Center staff -- no new director has been named as of this writing, but the CBC SMR VPs have been in contact with SMR management to make sure biathlon is still part of the Nordic Center scheme. Assuming a new director is hired and we continue to have races at SMR, CBC will need to take on all race organization duties at that venue. The following task breakdown has been suggested for SMR race and venue management:

CBC Management
  1. Registration (entry fee cut with Nordic Center - yes, no, maybe?)
    • Racer/Volunteer sign up
    • Zero/Race Order
    • Seeding
  2. Range Setup / Take Down
    • target ropes, carpets, paper targets
    • clear snow from rifle racks, picnic tables
  3. Range Officials
    • Chief of Competition (Level 1 Official)
    • Timing, Scoring, Penalty Loop Counter
    • Results posting after race
  4. Maintenance
    • Target upkeep
    • Rifle racks
    • Workdays
YMCA Management
  1. Course Grooming, Penalty Loop Grooming
  2. Course Loop Marking
    • Interface with SMR VPs to decide loops each race day
  3. Ongoing Range Grooming
    • Practice / Training availability
  4. Maintenamce of Range House
  5. Provide picnic tables for spectators and racers
  6. Course Timing Clock?

The other item of note is that Dave Martinez (our current National Guard representative) will not be able to actively participate in biathlon events during the coming year. He does not plan to make the Guard targets available at the CBC race venue(s). Although CBC could try to work through the necessary Guard channels to gain access to the targets, we may want to take the approach of aquiring enough targets so as to make CBC independent of other entities.

CBC Summer Race news
Don't forget -- the CBC summer biathlon events are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, August 21 and 22. We need volunteers and participants! Contact Bill Hay at Bill.Hay@UCHSC.edu or 303-399-9194 to volunteer. Entry forms should be posted to the Web site by the first week of August.

Olympic Volunteering Status
A specific contact for biathlon volunteers at the Salt Lake City 2002 Games is up in the air. However, you can add your name to the general volunteer database by pointing your Web browser at:

News for Officials
Certified Officials, we're putting you to work! This winter season, it's been suggested that we assign officials to specific races at the beginning of the season, and have those individuals take responsibility for running "their" race. Be prepared to put your certification to good use!

Individuals who received their Level 1 certification last year have a little longer to wait for their "Gray Books." The USBA has them, but they're also in the process of reorganizing their numbering system for Officials and that has yet to be completed. Stay tuned...

Certified officials should keep an eye on the venue for World Team Trials. If snow making equipment is installed over the summer, they will be held in Utah
