FYI in case you haven't received this race information. Not sure if anyone
has been up to Casper yet. Matt and I went up last year and the skiing was
very nice. Good trail system up and down hills in the trees mostly. It felt
like a winter wonderland. The area is only a short 10-15min drive from hotel
accommodations in Casper. ~Lisa

*Casper athletes compete in U.S. Biathlon Youth/Junior Team Trials*
Races took place Dec. 27-30 at Kincaid Park in Anchorage, Alaska. U.S.
Biathlon uses a three-day trial as the team selection process for the
Youth/Junior World Championships, Jan. 25-Feb. 2 in Cheile Gradistei,
Romania and the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games, Feb. 12-21 in Lillehammer,
Three Casper athletes, Katherine (Kit Kat) Gruner, Rylie Garner and Jake
Pearson competed in the trials. Team selection is determined by calculating
the percentage back in the best two of three races for each athlete. Only
the top four in the Youth category are chosen to represent Team USA at the
Youth World Championships, and the top two are chosen to represent at the
Youth Olympic Games. After three days of racing, two sprints and one
pursuit, Casper Mountain Biathlon Athletes proved themselves to be
contenders but came up shy on making the teams. Finals calculations ranked
Katherine Gruner in fifth and Rylie Garner sixth among the Youth Women, and
Jake Pearson sixth among the Youth Men.
Conditions in Anchorage, Alaska, made this a very challenging team trial.
Warm temps had race organizers questioning whether there would be enough
snow, and 20-35 mph winds forced wind delays and the possibility of
cancellation. On day two in the pursuit race, of the 44 finishers, only 12
racers hit 50 percent or more of their targets. Even in the face of these
challenging conditions, Garner proved herself to be the overall top shooter
with five misses out of 20, which helped her secure a bronze finish in the
10 km pursuit race.
Coach Rob Rosser from Casper Mountain Biathlon Club is extremely proud of
Garner, Gruner and Pearson. "While they didn't make the team, over the last
year at training camps and other races they have proven they have what it
takes. It just didn't happen for them at the Team Trials under the extreme
conditions. Another significant circumstance is that CMBC athletes have not
had the ability to train in a home biathlon facility. That is about to
change. The Casper Mountain Biathlon Center at McMurry Park is almost
finished with Phase 1 construction. This means in the next couple of weeks,
the facility will be open for regular training and racing. It really shows
how talented they (Gruner, Garner and Pearson) are to have made it this far
without a home training facility. The next 12 months will provide the
environment for some major improvement now that they will have a range
where they can ski and shoot."
All three athletes have one or two more years of eligibility to try out for
the World Championship Team.
