Biathlon is an Olympic sport which combines Nordic skiing with precision shooting.
Racers will shoot at metal targets 50m away betwen 2 and 4 times during a race with ski
distances between 6km and 20km!
Visit our schedule page for our list of upcoming events.
You'll need: a trail pass and skis
From the Nordic Center, ski down the hill and across Pole Creek. You can then either head up the short, but steep hill on the Biathlon trail, or turn right and take the longer, but more gradual, path.
Continue up the Biathlon trail, before turning left to ski underneath the shooting range to enter from the east.
Please keep to the far right of the trail and ski single file to share the trail with racers who may also be on course at the same time.
9:30 - 10:30 : Racers will be "zeroing", or sighting in their rifles using paper targets. There's a lot of action on the range during this time and you'll be able to see the different ways racers warm up.
10:45 (approx) : The race will begin with a racers taking to the course at a fixed interval (for most races). After watching racers skiing for several minutes, you'll then be able to watch as each arrives at the shooting range and attempts to hit 5 targets.
#1: The shooting range! Most of the action happens here and is where most people perfer to watch.
#2: Biathlon-Davis intersection. From this location you get an up close view of racers as they finish climbing to the top of the Biathlon trail, before either turning down the Davis trail or contining into the range. Also from this location you have a good view of the penalty loop, which racers ski for each missed shot.
If you plan to stay for awhile, water, snacks, and extra layers (depending on the day's weather) will make your time at the range more enjoyable.
Biathlon, particularly in Europe, is known for its boisterous crowds, so a cowbell or other noise makers wouldn't be out of place, should you be so inclined.
There is a warming hut available at the range on race days and spectators are welcome to stop in to have a seat, get out of the wind, and warm up. The warming hut has great views all around so you won't miss out on any of the action!
New for the '25/'26 winter season, CBC will be installing a vault toilet near the intersection of the Swenson and Lowery trails. The toilet is CBC's contribution to the trail system and is available for anyone to use whenever the trails are open.
